The Story of Buddy

By Dee Gilmer

When I was 15 years old, I moved back to Hapeville where my sister Nelda was living with her husband, Billy, who was a plumber for a plumbing company in Lakewood. One late Friday afternoon, my brother in law’s boss called him and told him that he had to go to Atlanta to pick up a permit for a job. His boss added that he was going to be unable to pick up his son from the dentist downtown, and asked Billy to pick him up and have his son stay at Billy’s place for the night. Billy agreed, and picked up his boss’s son. That Friday night, I stopped by my sister’s house, opened the front door and walked on in. As I looked around, I saw a guy about my age in a black shirt at the back of the room listening to some music. I strongly asked him “Who are you?” and he answered back “Um.. who are you??” I told him that I was Nelda's brother, and asked where Nelda and Billy were. He said they are not home. I asked him again “So who are you and what are you doing here?” He told me that Billy worked for his Dad’s plumbing company, and that his father did not pick him up, so he was staying over here for the night. He said “They may not be home until 2 or 3 in the morning, that's why I looked so shocked when you walked through the door because I kinda guessed I was stuck here all alone for the night.”

At that point we just looked at each other for a min or two, and we both started laughing very hard for the fact that the two of us just scared the hell out of each other. Then, we started talking and turned up the music and just hit it off like we knew each other for our entire lives up until that point. We both loved the same kind of music, we loved to talk to girls, and we both liked to have fun and get high! I looked at him and said “I feel like I’ve known you forever.”, and he agreed with me. I asked him where he lived, and he told me that he lived in ellenwood for about a year and went to stockbridge high school. Then I said that I never get down that far away, cause I live just the next town over in Hapeville, and only been back there for a few months, I had been living in Boston for about 2 years. he said that he didn’t not know anyone from that city, but he felt like he know me from somewhere else. I agreed, and said “Our paths must have crossed somewhere, so what do I call Billy's boss son, and he said everyone just calls me Buddy. I said “well, now we know each other.” and we gave each other a hand shake and had lots more laughs and it was like we knew that the two of us were going to become the best of friends.

I looked at him and said “It's Friday night, what in the world are we doing here? Let's go out and have some fun. I know a guy over in forest park that's having a party tonight, We can meet some girls and have a blast!" He looked at me and said “Now you're talking, my kind of talk and I do believe that we are going to become really good fiends.” We went out to have one the most fun and crazy nights of our Lives. Our friendship started and stayed strong from that night on.
